32nd Annual Athletic Meet & Drill Display

The Red House continued their eight-year reign over the Indian School Muscat overall championship by retaining the Cock House Trophy at the end of a well attended 32nd annual Sports Day at the school grounds last Thursday ( 24/01/2008 ).

The champion house also added silverware to their already overcrowded cupboard when they scooped the coveted trophy for the March Past.

To add to their glory was Class XII pupil Robson Sam Varghese, who was felicitated for being an outstanding sportsperson. Robson, the outstanding red house athlete has represented the school at the CBSE national games in four disciplines – basketball, volleyball, football and badminton – for five years.

His Excellency Mr. Anil Wadhwa, the Ambassador of India to the Sultanate of Oman, the guest of honour, formally declared open the 32nd annual athletic meet and drill display - an important event in the school calendar.   The Sports Coordinator, Neha Jacob took the oath on behalf of the school.

The annual event recognises and rewards the four Houses for their team effort in sports, athletics and various competitions such as quiz, debate, dramatics etc.

Karan Negi of Class VIII, winner of the bronze medal in the CBSE Nationals for Tennis held recently at Neeraja Modi School , Jaipur , India , presented a bouquet to the Chief Guest. Nikita Chengappa, Head Girl, welcomed the gathering.

The March Past, one of the prestigious events of the Sports Meet, then followed with its military pomp, precision and coordination. It was led by Varun Arora, Head Boy, Nikita Chengappa, Head Girl, and the members of the Students’ Council. They were followed by the four houses which marched majestically in their distinct colours – Red, Green, Blue and Yellow – led by their Captains Shrey Wilson, S. Vishvesh Jayanth, Anand Nagarajan and Sheen Jacob respectively, in the order of the previous year’s positions. The School Band comprising 36 students, led by Mr. Permanand, played the marching tune ‘Trumpet Voluntary’ – a confluence of the pianica, the trumpet, the tenor trombone, the French horns, the side-drums, the bass-drums and Euphonium - adding splendour to the march past.

14 exciting inter - house athletic events in various categories were then held on the occasion. Some of these participants had represented ISM at the National and Gulf Zonal Athletic Meets. The cheers from the spectators added to the spurt of speed that made the races really spectacular. The winners of these athletic events were honoured with medals by the Chief Guest.

The impressive Drill Display was presented by 2500 students with different accessories. The ‘Carnival drill’ – a fusion of bharatnatyam, modern dance, aerobics, carefree butterflies fluttering about, cheerleaders galore, hoopla performer and a clown – created a pulsating atmosphere of joy and delight. The ‘hoops drill’ presented a perfect environ to practise yoga with the rising orb and the gentle waves of morn, which is the most exquisite setting to seek the serenity within through the simple asanas.

About 550 students of Class V exercised their tender limbs and brought out the grace and fluidity, the strength and vigour that the human body is endowed with. These children dressed in white displayed their rhythmic and synchronized moves. The girls of Classes IX and XI performed the indigenous dance form, ‘Lazium drill’ to the backdrop of vibrant music. All the drills clearly showcased excellent precision, synchronization, rhythm, movement and formation. The accessories and the colour coordination added to the pomp and pageantry of the occasion. The showmanship of the entire display was acknowledged with a series of resounding applause.
