ISM ANNUAL GENERAL EXHIBITION – SPECTRUM 2007

 

Indian School Muscat Annual General Exhibition titled ‘Spectrum 2007’ was held on 31st October and 1st November 2007 in the school premises. The exhibition showcased the artistic skills of the students of classes IX to XII in subjects varying from languages, Mathematics, Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, Commerce, Computer Science, Engineering Drawing, Art and Photography.

 

The Chief Guest Dr. A. M. Agrawal, Dean, Waljat Colleges of Applied Sciences inaugurated the exhibition on 31st October 2007 at 5 p.m. after a  floral presentation by Pooja Gadige who topped in Science and Technology and secured above 90% overall in the Class X Board examination in March 2007. Nikita Chengappa, the school Head Girl introduced the Chief Guest to the dignitaries and members of the staff.

Dr. Agrawal accompanied by the members of the school Managing Committee and the Vice Principals went around the exhibition and interacted warmly with the students. He was appreciative of the hard work put in by the teachers and the students in preparing outstanding exhibits.

 

The Department of Physics came up with a mammoth display of scintillating models. The abstract and mind boggling principles of Physics became easy to grasp with a whole range of projects, working models and exhibits. ‘Extreme Toys’ conveyed the concept of using Physics in day-to-day life with household appliances. ‘Novel Aircraft’ brought out the concept of propulsion and lift mechanism with the help of toys and balloons. The Anti-gravity show and the Anti-mosquito software were well appreciated. The air-conditioned dress containing a cooling system was a unique exhibit. The ‘Physics of Music’ wherein one could see flames bobbing up and down to different heights and rhythms, in accordance with the changing sound frequencies was a crowd puller.

 

The displays put up by the Chemistry Department covered a wide variety of topics which were dealt with through functional and non-functional models. Work on ‘Renewable Sources of Energy’, ‘Desalination of Sea Water’, ‘Fire Extinguisher’, ‘Silver Cleaning Battery’ generated interest. The visitors were equally fascinated by projects like ‘Carbon Plasma’, ‘Smoke Precipitation’ and ‘Tsunami Warning System’. Other interesting models included Bio Fuel, Cells and an experiment to prove Boyle’s Law.

 

The attractive and educational exhibits presented by the Department of Biology shed light on various topics like Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Human Physiology and Biotechnology.  Projects like ‘Extracting Ethanol’ and ‘Biogas from Wastes’ were also demonstrated by well-crafted models. Different developmental stages of a human embryo were also exhibited. ‘DNA Extraction’ and Biotechnology Limited  were fascinating projects.

 

The Department of Mathematics presented a number of excellent quality exhibits to explain ‘Golden Ratio’.  There were a number of creative and innovative displays which included ‘Traffic Flow at Roundabouts’, Fibonacci Numbers’. Also on display were interesting models like the geometrical shape ‘Hyper Cones’, ‘Leaning Tower of Pisa’ and ‘ Koningsberg Bridges ’. The visitors were shown how easy computation could be, by applying the principles of Vedic Mathematics. Obscure mathematical concepts were made clearer with the help of projects like ‘Packaging Efficiency’ and ‘Tiling the Floor’. Informative charts on great mathematicians added glitter. 

 

The Department of Commerce made the concept of starting a business simpler for a budding entrepreneur through its model on ‘How an Entrepreneur grows’. Leech Effect, Horizontal and Vertical Growth of an Enterprise , Methods and Techniques of Promotion, Life Insurance, Retail Organizations and Banking were innovative and enlightening. Students of Economics focused on chain of production, money supply, population and problems related to the Indian Economy.

 

The Department of Social Science effectively presented academic subject matter through colourful and interesting charts. The newly declared Seven Wonders of the World were shown through models and charts. The models on Coal Mining, Tsunami, Landslides, and Rainwater Harvesting were backed by lucid explanations. The landmark event of the fall of Bastille prison during the French Revolution was depicted through a model chart. The elaborate process of Presidential election was simplified through a model and charts. A short skit conveyed the message of the need for consumer awareness.

 

The Department of Computer Science focused on many interesting topics and put up an outstanding display of a wide range of information on the latest computer technology. The model on Satellite Internet, the project on the working of Linux Operating System and a live project on e-mail hacking and security were the highlights. The demonstrations on how a 3-D animation works and how a Pentium IV Computer is assembled, were well received. These projects gave the visitors an insight into the world of computer technology. 

 

The Department of English featured cut-outs of poets, a host of informative charts on poets and authors and models on different lessons.  Budding writers displayed their literary and creative skills through their class magazines. The Sketch Comedy shows and the JAM sessions were a hit with the visitors of all age groups.

 

The Department of French through a variety of exhibits, charts and models brought to life the entire civilization of France , its culture, language and architecture.  Of special interest were the models of the Louvre, Eiffel Tower , and a vineyard. Visitors appreciated the display of a table set with typical French cuisine.

 

The Arabic Department highlighted wonderfully the Indo-Oman ties. They also brought out certain grammatical and lexical structures in this much loved language.

 

The Hindi Department focused on grammar related topics, spellings and writing skills. The most noted poets of the national language were also highlighted.

 

The students from the Department of Engineering Drawing showed their skills by building to scale fabulous models. Clock Tower, Eiffel Tower , Suspension Bridges, Al Burj and the Petronas Towers were a major attraction. Their skill in designing was exemplified in the ‘Machine Design Concept’ using the technique of development of solids in Engineering Drawing.

 

The Humanities Department centred on the themes of ‘Crime and Violence’ and ‘Mental Health’. The causes of crime, violence and juvenile delinquency were effectively dealt with. The various facets of mental illness and psychological disorders were interesting. The personality test, wherein the visitors could participate and have their personality analysed, was well appreciated.

 

The exhibits of the Art department and the Photography Club were extraordinary. The various exhibits of pencil sketches, glass paintings, floral designs and portraits done by students were eye catching. The photography exhibits, based on the theme ‘Beautiful Oman’, brought out the local sights at their picturesque best.

 

The school was abuzz with activity as students and visitors thronged to see the exhibition. ‘The exhibition has maturity, and I feel very strongly that the students are on a continuing journey of discovery,’ opined a visitor to the exhibition.

 

The Principal, Mr. Ainsley L. Edgar and the Acting Vice-Principal Mr. Terrence Dique congratulated and complimented the teachers and the students of the Senior Section in making this exhibition a great success.
