CAREERS JAMBOREE

Indian School Muscat had the inauguration of a three-day Career Awareness Seminar on 9th September, 2006. The programme has at its core the objective to create awareness about the different types of career, to help make career planning easier for students of Senior Secondary school by giving them an opportunity to meet successful professionals in different fields.

On the first day of the seminar, Mr. T.R. Mohana, Vice Principal of the Senior Section gave a formal welcome address in which he stressed on the role the parents have in helping their wards choose the right subjects. He stressed upon the need for parents not to burden their children with their own ambitions.

Mr. Ainsley L. Edgar, Principal ISM, in his inaugural address reiterated the need to create awareness among students and to leave the final choice to the individual on the basis of his interest and aptitude.

Among the speakers on the first day was Capt. M D Suresh (Indian Navy), the Defence Advisor at Embassy of India, Oman, who spoke on the various career options in the Defence Services.  The Army, Navy & Air Force are the custodians of the nation’s security and  require personnel to engage in combat with armoured tanks, missiles, submarines, aeroplanes, helicopters & light vehicles. Peridontists – specialists in gum disorders; Prosthodontists – makers of artificial dentures for teeth repair; Orthodontists- correctors of dental deformities along with Dental Bacteriology, Dental Pathology & Dental Radiology make the career options rather wide in this branch of medical sciences.

The concluding speech was on a career in Actuarial Science which is a novelty. Mr. Sandeep Jain, Actuarial Manager, National Life Insurance Co, SAOC, explained this rather new term to the audience simply as a job that is highly mathematical and involving product pricing, predicting risk & certifying the financial position of a company. The Actuarial Society of India conducts exams in the country and is affiliated to the Institute of Actuaries, UK. Casuality Actuarial Society and the Society of Actuaries in the US are some of the allied institutions.

All the three speakers gave detailed information about  the basic qualifications required and the institutions that offer the courses
