A trekking expedition to the Himalayas was organized
from 25th May to 5th
June 2006 for 25 students of Indian School Muscat. They were accompanied by Mrs.
Narender Kaur and Mr.Biju Varghese, teachers at the school.
A base camp was established at Dharamkot, 11 km
from Dharamshala at the height of 1,550 meters above sea level and surrounded by
mountains.
The trekkers found their way to the Buddhist Pagoda,
Krairi Lake, Bagsu Waterfall and the ancient Bagsu Temple for sight-seeing. They
visited the official residence of the religious and political leader of
Tibet-the Dalai Lama at Mc Leodganj and the monument erected in memory of the
Governor General of British India, Lord James Bruce who died at Dharamshala in
1863.
The students enjoyed shopping for various Tibetan and
Himachali products and tasted the typical Himachal cuisine. The trekkers had
their share of unforgettable experience when they spent two nights in tents on
the banks of river Beas. Walking through the rocky paths and gorges made the
adventure seekers put their physical strength to test.
At Triund,
the snowline, the group got a breathtaking view of the magnificent valley and
the snow covered mountains lit up by the sun.
Indrahara
Parvat, 3,800 meters above sea level offered masses of snow for frollicking. The
group had a stint at ‘rappelling’ on the steep rocky face of the hill.
Evergreen Pine, Oak and Deodhar trees on the banks of
crystal clear rivers flanked by tall snow-clad mountains remain etched in the
memory of each participant.
