ISM
LAUNCHES ‘CAMPAIGN AGAINST SMOKING’
Indian School
Muscat is organizing a ‘Campaign Against Smoking ‘as part of the Student
Guidance Programme (Health) from 24.10.2005 to 31.10.2005. The target is
the group of 1400 teenagers studying in classes IX to XII.
ISM is committed to the cause of positive contribution to the community it
serves. Adolescents in particular are in the danger of becoming prey to
unhealthy trends that exist in the society. Smoking is one such social
evil, which needs to be addressed with a sense of urgency. Hence the
Counseling Center and the teachers of the Senior Section of the school
have chalked out a project lasting a week.
The campaign is a three-pronged attack on smoking as an addiction and
threat. The objectives are to create awareness among the student community
about the ill effects of smoking, to prevent non-smokers from succumbing
to the lure of the cigarette, to identify and offer rehabilitation to
those who seek help to give up the addiction.
The highlight of each day‘s programme will be a Lecture by the Guest
Speaker Dr. K G Rajan, a specialist in Chest Diseases. There will a
10-minute interaction for queries after the talk. Skits that present
themes from Personal Health, Family Relations, Image and Conduct of
Smokers will also be presented. On-the-spot Poster, Poetry and Article
Competitions as well as PowerPoint Presentations and Short Video Film
Competitions are being planned. Each day’s proceedings will end with a
round of prize distribution for the contests held for the group. Guidance
materials graciously supplied by Tobacco Cessation Clinic will be
distributed to encourage the target group to become active campaigners
against substance abuse.
ISM hopes to light up a 'campaign against smoking' to create a generation
of individuals who choose to live life, king size without tobacco!
