VIRMANI (M.D., B. E. C.) AND
HONOURS ACADEMIC AWARDEES 2010
Indian School Muscat held its Annual Academic
Awards function for the year 2010, on Thursday 6th
May 10. Mr. Suresh K. Virmani, recipient of the
prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award, was the
Chief Guest at the function. The function was also
graced by the presence of the illustrious members of the
Board of Directors of Indian Schools in the Sultanate,
the School Managing Committee, proud parents of the
awardees, teachers, students and others. Every year, ISM
recognizes and honours the conscientiousness and
perseverance of those students from the Middle and
Senior sections, who have surpassed the others in
academics. The evening’s programme began with the
Chief Guest and other invitees being welcomed by
Krushika Uday Patankar, the Girls’ Dean. Mr. Suresh.
K. Virmani was felicitated by Mr. S. Subramanian,
President, School Managing Committee, and Mr. Achutan
Madhav, Principal, ISM, for Mr. Virmani’s achievement
of becoming the recipient of the prestigious Pravasi
Bharatiya Samman Award. A floral bouquet was presented
to the Chief Guest by Siddarth Kerkar and Tanvi Gupta. These
students have excelled as runners up first position in
the “International Terra Quiz” Competition held in
New Delhi
. The Chief
Guest lighted the lamp to commence the events. The
impressive cultural show was put up with the combined
efforts of the teachers and students of the Middle and
Senior Sections of the school.
The
entertainment programme began with a bedazzling ballet,
titled ‘Arpan’, depicting the humble submission of
the performers to the Almighty. The School Choir,
through their rendition of a beautiful song, conveyed
that there is no greater joy than spreading brotherly
love and oneness among mankind. Next, was a riveting
ballet in semi-classical fusion form, reiterating that
India stands tall and united, in spite of its rich and
diverse cultures. The School Orchestra kept the
gathering enthralled by their pleasing, instrumental
rendition of the popular song, ‘Heal the World’. The
Koli folk dance of Maharashtra, combined with lezium,
kept the audience enraptured.
The
Principal, Mr. Achutan Madhav, appraised the gathering
of the academic accomplishments of the students. This
was followed by the grand finale – 358 students from
the Middle and Senior sections were felicitated for
academic excellence. The meritorious students received
their awards from the Chief Guest, who later, addressed
the audience. He said that he and his wife were proud to
be associated with Indian School Muscat as parents of
three daughters who studied in ISM. ‘ISM is a great
school,’ he said, ‘and if my grandchildren are to be
born, I would have them educated in ISM,’ he added, to
a thunderous applause from the audience.
He
went down the memory lane to the years when he was
connected with ISM during its infancy, ‘when there was only a dusty mud road leading to the school,’ he
said. He reminisced the years when he was involved with
the school, being a part of the School Management
Committee, and initiated the process of construction of
a proper road to the school, which saw fruition within
months. He was also the Chairman of the Board of
Directors of Indian Schools in Oman in 2004-05 where he
contributed immensely to all schools in the Sultanate.
Giving education to children is
a difficult task, he commented, and invited applause
from the audience for the teachers who have a great role
to play in the life of our children.
We must not forget to thank the school for its
noble work, he said.
The
programme was brought to a befitting close with the Vote
of Thanks, proposed by Joshua Michael, the Boys’ Dean.
