Extempore
Speech Competitions were organised for
the students
of Standard VIII, on
the 29th of April 2009 and for the students
of Standard VII, on 4th May, 2009 by the
English Department in the Middle Section,
Indian
School
Muscat
. The event saw48 participants on 29th
April and
46 participants on 4th
May, taking the stage to testtheir oratory skills. They
were judged by a panel of esteemed judges. The students
ofclass VIII were judged by
Dr. Alex Joseph from the Department of English,
SeniorSection and Ms.
Lakshmi Vishwanath and Ms. Gladys Misquith from the
PrimarySection. The judges
for Class
VII were Ms Madhumati Balasubramanian
from the Department
of English , Senior Section, ISM, and Ms Priya Murali
and Ms
RajaniRamaswamy , both from the Primary Section.
The
criteria for judgement were content, language and
pronunciation, fluency, expression and confidence. All
the young participants spoke quite well, considering the
fact that they were given only one minute to prepare on
a topic given on the spot and had to organise their
thoughts and deliver the
speech, all within
a minute. The Head of Department, English, Middle
Section, Mr. Remy Athaide
and the judges spoke to the students emphasizing
the importance of participating
in such competitions for the development of their self
–confidence and talent in public speaking. The judges
lauded the performance
of the
students and complimented the participants on their
excellent command over the language and the confidence
with which they spoke
on any topic. The
winners of the competition from Standard VIII were
Samantha D’Souza of VIII I in the first position,
Aditi Uzagare of VIII J in the second position, and
Sangeetha Mahadevan of VIII K in the third position.
From Standard VII, the
first position was bagged by Devika Jayan of VII G, the
second position by Ranjitha
Kalasagar of VII C and the third position was taken by
Pashin Raja of VII D. All the winners were congratulated
by the Principal.
