SENIOR SCHOOL - A GLIMPSE

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH
Communicative approach is followed in the teaching of English and classes are lively and interesting with maximum participation and involvement of the students. The teachers make the teaching of English more effective by using various innovative methods such as Power Point presentations, Role Play, Radio Shows, Class Debates, Live Reporting, Class Quizzes and Spelling Bee.

DEPARTMENT OF HINDI
Students find the subject Hindi interesting as they can relate themselves easily with their Indian culture. Inter House Hindi Drama competition and debates are a regular feature and students are able to learn more about Indian traditions and customs through such competitions.

DEPARTMENT OF FRENCH
Students are introduced to the language through audiocassettes and flash cards. In Std XI and XII lessons are more advanced in content and learning is made more interesting through role plays and conversation sessions. Students are encouraged to speak in French and write essays on simple topics.

DEPARTMENT OF ARABIC
Class V students start learning Arabic and each year they continue learning more about this language. By the time students pass class VIII they can speak and understand this rich language. Class IX and X students can opt for Arabic as the second language for the Board exam.

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS
Mathematical skills are taught to those for whom class X is a terminal point in the study of Mathematics, those who are going to continue with the study of Mathematics as a tool in the study of other disciplines (XI and XII grade) and those who have special aptitude and talent and are going to do research in this subject at the college level. The course is graded and contains all the concepts and methods of Differential and Integral Calculus of elementary function and their applications, necessary techniques from Algebra, analytical Geometry, Trigonometry and its applications, Sequences and series and Complex analysis. 

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS
Eight students and the Head of Department Mr. T. Vijayaraghavan participated in the Space school programme organized by Space school U.K recently and our students benefitted immensely from this. At the National Science Olympiad examination, Rahul Gandhi of class XII was one among the top fifty and six other students secured their positions among the top hundred. Physics Olympiad is conducted every year for class XI and XII students and the successful candidates are awarded merit certificates. An exhibition in Physics is held once in two years and students are given an opportunity to exhibit their hidden talents. 

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
The department has a well equipped laboratory with sophisticated apparatus like a distillation plant, which provides necessary distilled water, Colorimeter, pH meter, bottle shaker, suction pumps, discharge tubes etc. These instruments are used to prepare quality projects at the class XII level. The school organizes the Gulf Chemistry Olympiad every year and over 30 CBSE affiliated schools participate in it. Students evince keen interest in the preparation of models, Science exhibition and many other department activities.

DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY
The department has a spacious, well-lit and well equipped laboratory. It also has an aquarium and a fledgling nursery. It also supports a well-equipped first-aid kit and trained staff to ensure precaution against accidents and minor injuries. Discussion on relevant issues, seminars, debates, guest speakers and field trips add essence to the subject. Support and remedial classes are conducted every year to cater to the average and below average students. 

DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE
The department provides training and education to all students in the discipline of information systems. The department supports a well equipped laboratory with Pentium machines and internet facilities. Computer Science and Informatics Practices subjects are available for class XI and XII students in the Science and Commerce stream respectively. Work experience is provided in MS-Office Packages, Visual Basic and Programming in C.

DEPARTMENT OF ENGINEERING DRAWING
The main purpose of teaching this subject at the Senior Secondary level is to develop competence amongst the students to pursue technical courses like Engineering, Architecture and other professional courses where geometrical and mechanical drawings are an integral part of teaching-learning process. Students offering this subject acquire necessary skill of making and understanding technical drawing and this enables the translation of the ideas of a designer on a paper into physical products. The students get an in depth knowledge and understanding of plain and solid geometry and machine drawing so as to apply these in relevant practical fields such as technology and industry. ISM has a sophisticated Engineering Drawing Room with Drawing Boards and instruments and it also has wooden models of various machine elements to facilitate effective learning and understanding.

DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE AND ECONOMICS
The department works in the interest of the students with the help of innovative teaching methods like the use of Power Point and over head projectors. Activities such as group discussions, project work and quiz are conducted in order to make the teaching learning process more interesting. The introduction of Entrepreneurship as a subject in the department has created a challenging interest among students.

DEPARTMENT OF HUMANITIES
ISM offers Humanities stream with Sociology and Psychology as the major subjects. These subjects are supported by exhibitions, seminars, debates, guest lectures, educational visits, leadership training workshops and career guidance. This department has a well equipped Psychology laboratory.

DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SCIENCE
The department concentrates on subjects such as History, Civics, Geography and Economics. The study of History promotes an understanding among the students in regard to various civilizations and cultures of the past and the contemporary world. The study of Geography develops an understanding of man and his environment. In Civics the main aim is to foster an intelligent understanding of the structure and working of civic and political institutions within the country and abroad. The subject of Economics familiarizes the students with the basic terminology and elementary ideas pertaining to contemporary economic problems and efforts being made to solve these problems at local, national and international levels. The department supports a club that inculcates a love for the subject through interesting activities.

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION
The school encourages students to participate in various sports and games within the school, in and around the capital and outside the country through a system of Inter House and Inter School competitions. Oman Cricket league, the Private School’s Sports league, tournaments in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the Gulf Zonal Meet and the National CBSE Meet in India give good exposure to our students.

DEPARTMENT OF ART
Art education teaches students the universal language of self-expression and how to interpret and communicate through forms and colours. Students from Std I to X enjoy doing drawing, painting and craft work. The syllabus is so designed that through geometrical and mechanical drawings they develop their aesthetic sense.

DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC
The students of classes IX and X are given the option to choose between Hindustani sangeet and Karnataka sangeet. The students are introduced to the two systems of Indian classical music and are taught the basic raags and taals. Apart from this the students are taught various group songs, prayers and the school anthem. The students learning music form the choir of the school. There is an Annual Music Talent competition for the students of the school.
